"瑞士制在選擇配位時最基本的一個原則是，挑選成績相同或最相近的選手進行比賽。\n\n第一輪比賽可通過抽籤決定或者根據賽前排名決定。比賽的勝者獲得1分積分，負者不得分，如果打平雙方各得0.5分（或勝兩分、和一分）。不管勝負如何，所有選手都進入下一輪。以後每一輪的配位，勝者對勝者，負者對負者，即根據此前的積分決定，積分相同或最相近的選手將相互對陣。當然前提是二者在前面的輪次中尚未交手過。在西洋棋比賽中，還要儘量使棋手執黑棋與執白棋的次數相等，普遍採用的辦法是輪換使用黑白棋。但不管怎樣，絕不能出現一名棋手連續3輪執一種顏色的情況。\n\n積分相同的選手配位基本規則是採用賽前排名編號，然後分成上下半區依次配對（如1號對5號，2號對6號...)。在必要的時候還要進一步調整以使棋手輪換先後手比賽，並保證此前相遇過的棋手不再相遇。\n\n具體的配位規則相當複雜，一般比賽的組織者都是通過特定的電腦程式幫助完成。只要嚴格執行，就不會出現組織者主觀制定配位的情況。\n\n比賽總輪次是賽前預先確定好的，一般為為3到9輪，最後的名次由選手的總積分決定。如果出現積分相等的情況，可以通過計算小分（如所有對手的積分總和）或布赫茲破同分法(Buchholz
