In Russia, it is customary to celebrate International Women's Day on March 8. According to tradition, on this day men give women flowers and gifts, surround them with special care and admiration and do their homework for them. \n\nIn Russia International Women's Day was first celebrated in St. Petersburg in 1913 on March 2. However, then it was not so peaceful as now, but was accompanied by rallies and demonstrations. One of the largest actions was held on February 23, 1917 on the old style (which is March 8 in our calendar), on the streets went out textile workers.\n\nIn the Soviet Union this day was celebrated as an official holiday since 1919, was originally called the International Women's Day, but from the end of the 1920s it was called the International Women's Day.
