He talks and puts to sleep the approaching travelers with his talking and singing, and those who are not strong enough to resist his magic and who have not prepared for the fight with him, the sorcerer cat kills with iron claws. But the one who can catch the cat will find salvation from all diseases and illnesses - Bayun's tales are healing.</p>\n\n<figure class = \"pic\">\n <img src=\"http://pavelgvozdev.ru/ogs_tournament/Bayun_the_cat/Bayun_the_cat_2.jpg\" width=500><br>\n <figcaption>Bayun the cat</figcaption>\n</figure>\n\n<p>The word Bayun means \"talker, storyteller, eloquent talker\", from the verb bayan, \"to tell, to talk\" (cf. also the verbs bayukat, lulling in the sense of \"to put to sleep\"). In fairy tales it is said that Bayun sits on a high, usually iron pole. The cat dwells far away in the Thirtieth Kingdom or in a lifeless dead forest, where there are no birds or animals.</p>\n\n<figure class = \"pic\">\n <img src=\"http://pavelgvozdev.ru/ogs_tournament/Bayun_the_cat/Bayun_the_cat_3.jpg\" width=500><br>\n <figcaption>Bayun the cat</figcaption>\n</figure>\n\n<p>There are several fairy tales where the main character is given the task of catching a cat; as a rule, such tasks were given with the purpose of ruining a good young man. An encounter with this fairy tale monster threatens imminent death. To capture the magic cat, Ivan-Tsarevich puts on an iron cap and iron gloves. Having defeated and captured the animal, Ivan-Tsarevich takes it to his father's palace. There the defeated cat begins to serve the tsar - to tell tales and heal the tsar with lulling words. </p>\n\n<figure class = \"pic\">\n <img src=\"http://pavelgvozdev.ru/ogs_tournament/Bayun_the_cat/Bayun_the_cat_4.jpg\" width=500><br>\n <figcaption>Bayun the cat</figcaption>\n</figure>\n\n<p>There is a point of view that Bayun the cat is a character invented and constructed in the XIX century, which became a member of the \"national bestiary\", actively invented by the Soviet mass culture. In the future \"folklorization\" and even \"mythologization\" of his image Bayun owes to neo-paganism and modern mass culture. </p>\n\n<figure class = \"pic\">\n <img src=\"http://pavelgvozdev.ru/ogs_tournament/Bayun_the_cat/Bayun_the_cat_5.jpg\" width=500><br>\n <figcaption>Real cats really like to sit on posts.</figcaption>\n</figure>\n\n<p>In the Soviet period, Baiun the cat became a full-fledged character in the collective consciousness of the \"national bestiary\" that had been constructed since the mid-1930s, joining Baba Yaga, Leshy, Serpent Gorynych and Koschei. In some motifs she is described as a repulsive or fierce-looking old woman who roasts and eats children, while in others she is a sweet old woman who helps the hero.</p>\n\n<p>In East Slavic fairy tales, Baba Yaga is an old woman with supernatural powers and associated with the world of the dead, as evidenced by her appearance, place of residence and main functions. Her characteristic features are old age, decrepitude and ugliness (nose in the ceiling), emphasized female physiology (breasts hanging over the threshold). An important feature of Baba-Yaga is her one-legged or bone (less often - iron, wooden) leg, i.e. dead, devoid of flesh, which brings the character closer to other one-legged creatures of world mythology, having snake origin. There is a reason to consider Baba Yaga blind, as she recognizes the approach of a man by his smell. Baba Yaga's permanent attributes are a bread shovel, on which she tries to roast the hero, an oven, and a stupa, in which she moves with the help of a pestle.</p>\n\n<figure class = \"pic\">\n <img src=\"https://pavelgvozdev.ru/ogs_tournament/babayaga/BabaYaga_2.jpg\" width=500>\n <figcaption>Georgy Milyar as Baba Yaga.</figcaption>\n</figure>\n\n<p>Baba Yaga's dwelling is a cramped hut, which stands on poles or goat (goat, sheep) legs or on one leg, sometimes propped up with pancakes. The bird legs of the hut have no definite explanation, their erection to tree trunks with roots, on which forest benches were placed, is doubtful. The fence around the hut consists of human bones and skulls. Baba-Yaga lies in the hut on the floor, on a bench or on the stove, occupying almost the entire space (resting her head on one wall and her feet on the other), which brings her dwelling closer to a coffin, and Baba-Yaga herself to a dead man. The hut is located on the border of the forest, being the only passageway between the human and the otherworld (\"Tridevyatiye Tsarstvo\"), where the hero of the fairy tale must get to solve a magical problem. According to Japanese beliefs, the azalea tree protects family happiness.
