In Russia, it is customary to celebrate International Women's Day on March 8. According to tradition, on this day men give women flowers and gifts, surround them with special care and admiration and do their homework for them. \n\nIn Russia International Women's Day was first celebrated in St. Petersburg in 1913 on March 2. However, then it was not so peaceful as now, but was accompanied by rallies and demonstrations. One of the largest actions was held on February 23, 1917 on the old style (which is March 8 in our calendar), on the streets went out textile workers.\n\nIn the Soviet Union this day was celebrated as an official holiday since 1919, was originally called the International Women's Day, but from the end of the 1920s it was called the International Women's Day. By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 8, 1965 this date was declared a day off. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, March 8 remained a public holiday in Russia, and a day off.\n\nHistorians believe that the date March 8 was chosen in memory of major strikes of textile factory workers in the United States, which took place on March 8, 1857 and 1908: in 1857 in New York, textile factory workers held a \"march of empty pots\" - marched through the city protesting against the unacceptable working conditions and low wages, and in 1908 the strike of New York women was held again - 15 thousand women marched, who demanded a reduction in working hours and equal pay conditions with men.\n\nThere will be no scandals, intrigue or investigations at this tournament.
