\n\n \n\nGrandpa Frog, who is an official member of the GoMagic group on the OGS, is hosting an unofficial September (2023) GoMagic Jazz Standards tournament.
\n\n \n\nA jazz standard, also an evergreen, is a musical composition as part of the general jazz repertoire. A jazz standard - most often a popular song, less often an instrumental piece - is used by a jazz musician as the basis for individual or ensemble arrangements, in a spontaneous music-making setting or in a recording studio.
\n\n \n\nJazz standards, these are tunes that everyone knows and that have become classics of jazz music. Let's take a look at one of the jazz standards, the composition Now's the Time by Charlie Parker.
\n\n \n\nCharlie Parker is one of the few musicians who radically influenced the development of jazz, the greatest saxophonist of all time. Together with trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and pianist Bud Powell, Parker (nicknamed Yardbird or Bird) is considered the pioneer of bebop. As a performer, Parker possessed a unique sound, an unusually developed harmonic ear and an amazing phraseological logic. In the 50s of the last century it was already impossible to play modern jazz without taking into account Parker's achievements.

\nย ย Now's the Time. The theme was written in 1945. It is a blues based on simple repetitive riffs. Parker decided to use a simple intonation pattern that was always favored by musicians in his hometown, Kansas City. The first recording featured trumpeter Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie (playing piano), and double bassist Curley Russell and drummer Max Roach. So let's listen to the jazz standard Now's the Time.
