Move 0 + 14
August 10, 2019
[15:10] TaBellaria[7k]: hi
[15:14] h223[1d]: Hi
[15:15] 0nironauta[4k]: playing bottom-left corner?
[15:15] kickaha[4d]: hey.
[15:16] Mitsunari[1d]: s16?
Move 0 + 15
[15:16] derekwisher5[11k]: is there sound to this?
Move 0 + 14
[15:17] mark5000[7d]: Text only.
Move 0 + 15
[15:17] derekwisher5[11k]: thanks
[15:17] derekwisher5[11k]: so you waiting for someone to supply the right answer?
Move 0 + 14
[15:17] h223[1d]: I think s16 too
[15:17] mark5000[7d]: Assume the other corners are taken and tenuki isn't good now. What local play keeps sente?
Move 0 + 16
[15:19] TaBellaria[7k]: s16 s14 p14 r13
Move 0 + 17
[15:19] TomaLexi[2k]: that literally jappened to me today
Move 0 + 18
[15:19] TaBellaria[7k]: is bad
Move 0 + 20
[15:19] derekwisher5[11k]: So S14?
[15:19] TomaLexi[2k]: when reading goes wrong.
Move 0 + 15
[15:20] Maro98[4k]: is p15 proper?
Move 0 + 16
[15:20] derekwisher5[11k]: but... haha
Move 0 + 17
[15:20] derekwisher5[11k]: no you lose sente and bad shape?
[15:20] Mitsunari[1d]: not sente
[15:20] TomaLexi[2k]: and W counterattacks
[15:20] TomaLexi[2k]: yea
Move 0 + 15
[15:21] Cement[6k]: isn't that still gote?
[15:21] derekwisher5[11k]: do you keep sente?
[15:21] kickaha[4d]: threatens s16
Move 0 + 17
[15:22] tpnZbonek[5k]: isnt it kind slow to capture those two stones now?
[15:23] TomaLexi[2k]: yes it is
[15:23] TaBellaria[7k]: eventually white will have to come back and defend
[15:23] TomaLexi[2k]: at this stage? not really
[15:24] mark5000[7d]: Actually, s16 is quite big, even in the opening. Remember: corners are the most efficient and most valuable areas.
[15:24] Cement[6k]: those two stones are +/- ~12 points
[15:24] Cement[6k]: for white
[15:24] mark5000[7d]: Thanks for the calc.
[15:25] mark5000[7d]: So that move rivals other opening moves. And we can assume other corners are somewhat developed, since taisha only shows up after move 5 or so.
Move 0 + 16
[15:26] mark5000[7d]: I'll show you another example.
Move 0 + 18
[15:28] TaBellaria[7k]: T18?
[15:29] tpnZbonek[5k]: still gote
[15:29] tpnZbonek[5k]: ah
Move 0 + 19
[15:29] TomaLexi[2k]: yeah, Wplays at S19 I think and then throw in if B doesnt react
Move 0 + 21
[15:30] clackie[6k]: doesn't that make it a' sente?
[15:30] TomaLexi[2k]: What if W plays S19 instead of tenuki?
Move 0 + 20
[15:31] TaBellaria[7k]: R18?
[15:33] tpnZbonek[5k]: P17?
Move 0 + 23
[15:33] TomaLexi[2k]: oh neat
[15:33] Shekomaru[6k]: Black can tenuki now
[15:33] Cement[6k]: now T19 doesn't work
Move 0 + 20
[15:35] TomaLexi[2k]: ko?
[15:37] mark5000[7d]: So yes, ko is the answer.
[15:38] roentgenium[5k]: I think the subject of Ko would be an idea for a future lecture :)
[15:38] mark5000[7d]: Will consider it!
[15:38] mark5000[7d]: The point of today's lesson is to show you how to fight for sente.
[15:38] TomaLexi[2k]: yeah its interesting
[15:38] TomaLexi[2k]: the last example is above 9k level i think
[15:38] mark5000[7d]: If you do not know about fighting for sente, you will miss the subtext of many games.
[15:38] Cement[6k]: also black can get sente later maybe and defend himself against ko
[15:38] TomaLexi[2k]: i will need to show that in our local go club :)
[15:39] mark5000[7d]: That concludes today's lecture. Any questions?
[15:39] clackie[6k]: ko's are always bad for me, I don't think I've ever had enough ko threats in my life ever
[15:39] derekwisher5[11k]: Thank you!
[15:39] Shekomaru[6k]: Thanks a lot Mark :)
[15:39] Cement[6k]: are there common things to look for midgame that might indicate that you can get sente?
[15:40] cascina-goban[?]: ty!
[15:41] mark5000[7d]: Yes, there are signs you can get sente. Those signs are visible through reading. We looked at one example today, that forcing moves aren't always good.
[15:41] mark5000[7d]: If you read a short sequence that ends in gote, try omitting one of the moves along the way and see if it works better.
[15:42] mark5000[7d]: You might stumble upon a sente sequence.
Move 0 + 17
[15:43] Cement[6k]: I see
Move 0 + 20
[15:43] Cement[6k]: perhaps "when to use forcing moves" is also a good lecture topic too, assuming it hasn't been done already
[15:44] mark5000[7d]: Indeed
[15:44] mark5000[7d]: There's so many topics in Go. This is my 20th lecture and I still get suggestions all the time.
[15:45] mark5000[7d]: See lectures 1-19 here: becoming 9-kyu-a-series-for-beginners
[15:45] tpnZbonek[5k]: mark.. i watched for your study session group
[15:45] tpnZbonek[5k]: you post some positions there.. what is the point? find the best move in the board?
[15:46] mark5000[7d]: Yes
[15:46] tpnZbonek[5k]: ah.. ok
[15:46] mark5000[7d]: To find the move the pro played, or that another strong player might play, and to sharpen your reading skill.
Move 0 + 20
[15:49] roentgenium[5k]: Thanks for taking the time to do these lectures
Move 0 + 14
[15:49] mark5000[7d]: You're welcome.
[15:50] mark5000[7d]: See you next Saturday about the same time. :)
[16:47] trohde[3k]: Thanks, @mark5000!
