Move 0
April 1, 2025
[15:56] Jarmo[4k]: Have a great game! Would you like to play against a territorial black or an influence black?
[15:57] saxmaam[18k]: hmmm. my plan is to stick with three star points if I can. what do you suggest?
[15:59] saxmaam[18k]: i suppose white doesn't necessarily have that option
[16:00] Jarmo[4k]: White is usually the responder. They do have options on what they play but it usually doesn’t effect what Black plays.
[16:00] Jarmo[4k]: I can play double star for influence or double 3-4 for territory.
[16:01] Jarmo[4k]: Maybe influence since I’m seeing the attempt to stop a moyo sometimes comes too late
Move 7
[18:16] Jarmo[4k]: Do you know this Joseki?
[18:17] Jarmo[4k]: I would look it up and explore it a bit. It’s the new standard and it’s okay to memorize a couple lines.
Move 8
[21:48] saxmaam[18k]: i don't. i did guess the next move tho
Move 9
[21:58] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: It replaces this old Joseki
[22:43] saxmaam[18k]: old joseki is so nice and simple ....
Move 10
[23:04] Jarmo[4k]: Haha, right?
Move 15
April 2, 2025
[14:46] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: I like big areas
[14:47] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Sharing doesn’t feel as good to me.
Move 17
[15:12] Jarmo[4k]: Tell me why you kicked.
[17:49] saxmaam[18k]: i didn't want you to double enclose me. so I thought i'd kick, then do something like r14
Move 18
April 3, 2025
[12:04] Jarmo[4k]: I see. A few rules of thumb to remember:
[12:06] Jarmo[4k]: Being double approached isn’t a bad thing. It’s completely viable. Learning a favorite line to keep you out of trouble would help.
[12:07] Jarmo[4k]: The kick doesn’t secure the corner. I’ve heard it’s viable in a non attacking position because it lets you keep sente.
[12:08] Jarmo[4k]: My personal opinion that I think is right, if you don’t follow the kick up with D14, it would probably be better to not play the kick.
[12:10] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: This doesn’t feel good
[12:11] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Kick is sente
[12:12] Jarmo[4k]: If you play the appropriate flow up and I don’t extend, you get a good attack going on me
[12:12] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: How I would have responded
Move 19
[12:14] Jarmo[4k]: If you want to undo to explore anything feel free, or we can explore this
[12:18] Jarmo[4k]: For double approaches being worrisome, you could intentionally let them happen every game to learn about responses.
[12:18] Jarmo[4k]: My favorite one is Old now but I still like it
[12:18] Jarmo[4k]: It’s good in handicap games:
[12:19] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: This was fun
[12:27] Jarmo[4k]: If you use Josekipedia you can pass and it gives you follow ups for tenuki. Tons of double approaches to explore
Move 20
[12:35] Jarmo[4k]: It’s a less simple idea but I have a weak group for you to consider
Move 21
[12:35] Jarmo[4k]: If I’m playing simple I should really respond to your move
Move 24
[12:48] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Moves I’m considering
Move 25
[12:54] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: My weakness
Move 29
[14:17] Jarmo[4k]: When I play this, I don’t care about territory or life and death. If I kill your, great. If I attack you, great. At the minimum I have demolished this area of the board:
[14:17] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Not a lot of points here
[14:17] Jarmo[4k]: Then I can just compare the remaining zones
[14:18] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: I just need to get more points in my zones
Move 33
[18:22] Jarmo[4k]: This could be a capture the cutting stone situation.
[18:23] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Maybe?
[18:23] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Maybe?
[18:23] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Maybe 2
[18:25] saxmaam[18k]: so many sub skills ...
[18:27] Jarmo[4k]: Sub skills?
[18:34] saxmaam[18k]: opening, life and death, capturing races, cutting, reading
[18:37] saxmaam[18k]: tesuji
Move 34
[18:49] Jarmo[4k]: Undo that move, the crosscut only work’s before defend
Move 35
[18:59] saxmaam[18k]: actually you have to undo first
[19:02] Jarmo[4k]: Haha, right.
Move 34
[20:22] Jarmo[4k]: Very hard choice for me. Not sure which one’s better
Move 35
April 4, 2025
[4:25] Jarmo[4k]: I’m planning a double hane here but i would really like to get sente and attack on the upper left
Move 36
[12:38] Jarmo[4k]: Double hane doesn't work I think. I will take sente.
Move 41
[12:41] Jarmo[4k]: Playing on my computer this morning. It is kind of nice. When a move is made, I hear a click and know to jump over to the browser;
Move 42
[12:42] saxmaam[18k]: that IS handy
Move 45
[12:47] saxmaam[18k]: i just pulled the game up on my brother's phone. it's a secondary stone clicker! (playing on my ipad)
[12:48] Jarmo[4k]: At this point I think it looks bleak. If you were to get compensation for the attack I am getting, it would have to come through a large attack of your own.
[12:48] Jarmo[4k]: I love playing on the Ipad!
[12:49] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Weak spots that will start an attack.
[12:49] Jarmo[4k]: Do any of those 4 points look completely out of the ordinary to you?
[12:53] saxmaam[18k]: G2
[12:54] saxmaam[18k]: I have an ipad stand that holds my ipad 1' in front of my face as i sit in rocking recliner. For one person, it's pretty much a big-screen tv.
Move 46
[12:56] Jarmo[4k]: Haha, that was an old coworker of mine. He had an arm that held it above him while he laid down.
[12:56] Jarmo[4k]: like a mechanical arm of sorts
[12:56] saxmaam[18k]: mine will do that too
Move 50
[12:57] Jarmo[4k]: I'm still holding mine like a caveman
Move 51
[12:57] Jarmo[4k]: So here, you can get support for your own group and put pressure on mine
Move 52
[12:58] Jarmo[4k]: Right.
[12:58] saxmaam[18k]: fabulous purchase, my ipad stand
[12:59] Jarmo[4k]: Now I gotta think. I want to make a shape move with my running group and defend my lower right, and pressure your lower left and prepare a large surrounding move on the upper left.
Move 53
[13:05] Jarmo[4k]: Shape won for me. It’s kind of a distant attack on the upper left too.
Move 55
[13:28] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: A wash
[13:29] Jarmo[4k]: I’m considering this whole area of the board as zero points for high level estimate. Two groups each, 4-10 points in each group, I’ll just call them all 0
[13:30] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Remainder
[13:31] Jarmo[4k]: If we look at the rest, my zones look like that have more potential. I’m also going to try and pressure the bottom left and top left to try and get a chunk in the yellow area
April 5, 2025
[10:50] saxmaam[18k]: nice breakdown.
[10:52] saxmaam[18k]: should i just abandon the northwest group?
Move 56
[12:19] Jarmo[4k]: Not abandon, but tenuki maybe. If I was going to try and play a flow that benefited white I’d aim for something like this:
[12:19] Jarmo[4k]: Oh wait, it’s blacks turn.
Move 57
[12:22] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: An approach to the attack
[12:23] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: A counter attack
[12:23] Jarmo[4k]: The power of two moves in a row is significant. For example if I just took what my last move threatened:
[12:24] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: These have become weaker groups. One more so
[12:26] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: This was the problem move.
[12:26] Jarmo[4k]: You should use your local advantage on the left to pressure my stone. A pincer possibly
[12:27] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: A fight
[12:28] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Hiding away in the corner but the corner isn’t too small
[12:37] Jarmo[4k]: I think if I could sum up the things I see in handicap games with everyone I’m playing it’s to attack my weak groups more. I recognize that that is easier said than done though.
[12:40] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: This attack would give up the corner but work together with the bottom right to map a large area.
[12:43] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Another path
[12:45] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Black lives probably but left the attack spot open
[12:46] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Another game entirely
[12:47] Jarmo[4k]: None of these sequences should be read out, they don’t matter.
[12:48] Jarmo[4k]: Just the desire to pick on my single stone should matter
[12:48] Jarmo[4k]: For that Joseki we played in the lower left, should you play it in another game:
[12:49] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: This can be an attack and is threatening to make a wall
[12:50] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Locally it has one eye.
[12:50] Jarmo[4k]: If you were to make a move that prepares this attack first, it could be more severe
[12:51] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: Points on both sides of the attack
Move 63
[18:52] Jarmo[4k]: Nice moves
[18:53] saxmaam[18k]: blind squirrel ... nut ....
[18:53] saxmaam[18k]: thanks
Move 66
[19:02] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: This one is starting to block a small group’s escape route so I play gote to support it
[19:04] Jarmo[4k]: Variation: This move is stopping me from getting a lot of the center. It’s also threatening to support your group at the top. It’s also distantly attacking my weak group at the bottom
