Move 46
January 10, 2014
[4:53] tzorec[?]: OK - lets go to the start
Move 1
[4:53] newbold[?]: The review tools are very nice here :)
[4:53] tzorec[?]: This is a good opening move :^)
[4:53] newbold[?]: it's pretty much how I start all 9x9s, yeah :)
[4:54] tzorec[?]: How are you on the standard joseki?
[4:54] newbold[?]: pretty awful actually, heh
[4:54] newbold[?]: I know like the first couple of moves for several, but that's about it :)
[4:54] tzorec[?]: Do you know the san-san (3,3) invasion one?
[4:54] newbold[?]: mostly, but inconsistently, I think
[4:54] tzorec[?]: I'll run through it
[4:55] tzorec[?]: when there is a stone on the 4,4 point (like yours) your opponent can always jump in and take the corner with the san-san invastion
Move 1 + 12
[4:55] tzorec[?]: Look familiar?
[4:56] newbold[?]: yes :)
[4:56] tzorec[?]: This give white the corner territory and black outside influence
[4:56] newbold[?]: not too bad, in this case, it seems
[4:57] tzorec[?]: I didn't choose this opening because it would be difficult for white to get territory anywhere else on the board - black's influence is too strong
[4:57] newbold[?]: yes, it seems so
Move 2
[4:57] tzorec[?]: So I took the other corner :^)
Move 3
[4:58] newbold[?]: usually I play 9x9 more aggressively
[4:58] newbold[?]: I would have normally played F6 next against someone near my rank
[4:58] newbold[?]: er
[4:58] newbold[?]: E6
[4:58] tzorec[?]: I see
Move 2 + 1
[4:59] newbold[?]: but in this case I thought I'd simply try to work on securing the bottom
[4:59] tzorec[?]: That's a good strategy when playing someone stronger
[4:59] newbold[?]: "try not lose with no territory" :P
[4:59] newbold[?]: not TO lose, that is, heh
Move 4
[5:00] tzorec[?]: This move was a tester - to see how you would react :^)
Move 8
[5:00] newbold[?]: did I pass? :)
[5:01] tzorec[?]: Yes ... but
[5:01] newbold[?]: in hindsight, yeah, this was kind of slow and thick and unhelpful I think
Move 8 + 1
[5:02] newbold[?]: yeah, C4 is clearly worth more territory than my lame threat at F5 :P
[5:02] tzorec[?]: While fairly defensive it does make white think about answering
[5:02] tzorec[?]: if not
Move 8 + 9
[5:03] newbold[?]: interesting
[5:03] tzorec[?]: Now white is heavy and black has most of the lower and left side :^)
Move 8 + 2
[5:03] tzorec[?]: so White must follow
Move 8 + 2
[5:04] tzorec[?]: Now would be the time to do a san san invasion in either corner
Move 8 + 3
[5:04] tzorec[?]: or
Move 8 + 3
[5:04] newbold[?]: I waited too long, yes
[5:05] tzorec[?]: It's very hard to kill a stone on the 3,3 point
Move 10
[5:05] tzorec[?]: So F5 actually helped white connect :^)
Move 17
[5:06] tzorec[?]: J6 is unnecessary and a bit slow in a 9x9 game
[5:06] newbold[?]: hmm
[5:06] newbold[?]: what would you have done?
[5:06] newbold[?]: H5 or H4?
[5:06] tzorec[?]: Probably 3,3 at C7
Move 16 + 1
[5:07] newbold[?]: ohhh
[5:07] newbold[?]: interesting
[5:07] newbold[?]: see, I'm still stuck in the mindset of "I can't leave H6 alone to die!"
[5:07] newbold[?]: and I fail to realize that there are other threats that can be made
[5:07] tzorec[?]: White has lots of weaknesses along its wall and C7 also acts as a ladder breaker
[5:08] tzorec[?]: If white ignores C7 and captures H6 then it's only a couple of points.
Move 16 + 5
[5:08] newbold[?]: fascinating how that one move could have turned the tide of the game :)
[5:08] tzorec[?]: Now white's in trouble
[5:08] tzorec[?]: It's one of the things I love about Go :^)
Move 18
[5:09] newbold[?]: it was too late now, right?
[5:09] newbold[?]: for the 3-3?
[5:09] tzorec[?]: Yes ... C6 was specifically made to stop a 3,3 invasion
Move 19
[5:09] newbold[?]: I figured I had to at least try it, otherwise I had no hope at all
Move 17
[5:10] tzorec[?]: If you wanted to jump in the deep like that then something like D7 might work better
Move 18 + 1
[5:10] newbold[?]: interesting!
[5:10] tzorec[?]: It threatens a cut at E6
Move 18 + 9
[5:11] newbold[?]: alive?
[5:11] tzorec[?]: Still hard to live
[5:11] newbold[?]: ah
Move 18 + 10
[5:11] tzorec[?]: No :^(
Move 26
[5:12] newbold[?]: I should have just given up at this point, heh
[5:12] tzorec[?]: This move is the "eye" killer
[5:12] newbold[?]: yeah, it's a little silly how I thought I could still live somehow :P
Move 18
[5:13] tzorec[?]: You could possibly have invaded through G7
Move 18 + 8
[5:13] newbold[?]: oh
Move 18 + 11
[5:13] newbold[?]: that's nice
Move 18 + 13
[5:14] tzorec[?]: White can't go at F9 or it will be captured
Move 18 + 7
[5:14] newbold[?]: yeah, seems that either way G7 is good
[5:14] tzorec[?]: Another (better for white)
[5:15] tzorec[?]: When looking at the board try to see where your opponent has a weakness in their position
Move 18 + 1
[5:15] tzorec[?]: Black could also have gone here before G7
[5:16] tzorec[?]: Forcing white to follow
[5:16] newbold[?]: that would have helped, yes
Move 18 + 3
[5:17] tzorec[?]: Also keep in mind white has the komi ... so doesn't need to get as much territory as black to win
[5:17] newbold[?]: yeah, I've won many 9x9 games as W due to komi :)
[5:17] tzorec[?]: Anyway ... I'm going to have to head off. Thanks for the game :^)
[5:17] newbold[?]: thank you, too, for the review!
[5:18] tzorec[?]: There's a great sight goproblems.com where you solve problems
[5:18] newbold[?]: ah, I've been meaning to check that one out for a while
[5:18] newbold[?]: I should really do it :)
[5:18] tzorec[?]: If you register (it's free) you can use the "auto" feature which gradually gives you harder problems as you get better
[5:19] newbold[?]: Oh, awesome -- I'll do it!
[5:19] tzorec[?]: OK - CYA :^)
[5:19] newbold[?]: bye!
