White wins by Resignation
canyonclimber[12k]: You too
Move 1
ajiadjuster[1k]: By the way, what's your name again? We've probably met, but I can't remember
Move 3
canyonclimber[12k]: Martin
canyonclimber[12k]: What’s yours
ajiadjuster[1k]: I'm Andrew. How often do you make it to meetings?
Move 4
canyonclimber[12k]: Been trying for weekly but missed a couple. Still relatively new to the club
Move 5
ajiadjuster[1k]: ah, ok, maybe we haven't met. I've been around a long time, but haven't been coming lately
ajiadjuster[1k]: who do you usually play with on Sundays?
Move 6
canyonclimber[12k]: I’ve played Vincent but I always lose. I’ve also played Ian, Michael, Paul, I think I remember you. I’ve played someone named Andrew before maybe 2 weeks ago.
Move 9
ajiadjuster[1k]: Ah, actually there's another Andrew and it was probably him. <error>
ajiadjuster[1k]: Vincent and I always have good game
ajiadjuster[1k]: Paul as well. I don't think I've played Ian.
ajiadjuster[1k]: Michael is probably around your level?
Move 10
canyonclimber[12k]: Yeah Michael’s around my level. I think I’ve won against Paul like once but Vincent is pretty tough to play against. I usually don’t play handicapped because I don’t mind losing and I feel like it’s more constructive to learn how to get stronger through playing w/o them
Move 11
ajiadjuster[1k]: I'm the same - don't love handicap games on either side
ajiadjuster[1k]: Vincent is close to my level. Paul is a few stones weaker, but we also have good matches.
Move 12
canyonclimber[12k]: both of them are fun to play, but I have yet to improve. I have been trying to break into sdk for the past few months and everytime i drop to 10 or 9 i bounce back up
Move 13
canyonclimber[12k]: M17, M16, H17, F17, E18, E16 were other areas I was thinking could be good but I figured it is better to play on the larger side of the board
ajiadjuster[1k]: the attack around M17 is definitely for later
ajiadjuster[1k]: in the opening, always go for enclosures or approaches first, which basically leaves C14, F17, or C17
ajiadjuster[1k]: the other appealing option is R6
ajiadjuster[1k]: maybe O4
Move 14
ajiadjuster[1k]: I would also have considered C8, though it's not an approach move
ajiadjuster[1k]: I'm sure you're familiar with the idea of going from corners to sides to center
ajiadjuster[1k]: that's why I wouldn't choose M17, M16, or H17 yet
ajiadjuster[1k]: I think you need a special reason to play moves like E18 or E16. But with the usual knight's move approach available, there's no need
Move 15
canyonclimber[12k]: I know C17 was probably he better move as opposed to B16, but I'm not sure I want the corner
Move 16
canyonclimber[12k]: Well I guess I get the corner now
Move 18
ajiadjuster[1k]: yep, congrats
Move 23
ajiadjuster[1k]: Variation: B16 is unusual, here are the typical responses to the pincer
canyonclimber[12k]: So responding with F17 instead of C14 would have made for an interesting outcome
ajiadjuster[1k]: yeah, that one is a little complicated. for me it's almost always going to be C17, but it depends on the context
ajiadjuster[1k]: E14 next most common, F17 depending on situation
canyonclimber[12k]: Variation: I was visualizing this outcome
Move 24
ajiadjuster[1k]: in fact, I responded with D14 without really registering your move. I should have replied with C17
ajiadjuster[1k]: though I think you should jump instead of another knight's move
ajiadjuster[1k]: Variation: this looks playable for me
canyonclimber[12k]: Variation: I was visualizing this outcome
ajiadjuster[1k]: Variation: better outcome for you, but still not as good as the standard joseki
canyonclimber[12k]: I was thinking that the cut would give you the top and I would put pressure on C12 in exchange
ajiadjuster[1k]: well, in your variation I get a lot on top
ajiadjuster[1k]: you can attack C12, but I could just ignore it and still end up with more out of the exchange... or I could try to save it and you still don't have eyes
ajiadjuster[1k]: Variation: looks ok for me, and you still need to play C11
ajiadjuster[1k]: your idea was playable, though, especially against someone closer to your level
ajiadjuster[1k]: actually, though, I wonder if that cut still works
ajiadjuster[1k]: Variation: can you handle D13?
ajiadjuster[1k]: think it over. I've got to go for now. have a good afternoon
canyonclimber[12k]: thanks.
Move 49
January 14, 2025
canyonclimber[12k]: Idk what’s happening at this point but seems like probably a bad turnout for me
Move 54
ajiadjuster[1k]: A capturing race, or in any case two weak groups trying to survive. It's interesting
Move 58
canyonclimber[12k]: im short liberties and all variations i see end in a ladder
Move 61
ajiadjuster[1k]: Yeah. The cut at D13 was a good idea, but I guess you needed more strength first. I'll look at it more closely later
Move 62
canyonclimber[12k]: i had been eying it and that was why i originally peeped, but i may have moved too soon or too late because It seemed like the groups were getting too close
Move 64
ajiadjuster[1k]: I also liked F17 with miai to connect or make a base
canyonclimber[12k]: oh yeah I had to play f17 in response it felt too good
Move 80
ajiadjuster[1k]: Variation: I would have considered this sort of move, perhaps
ajiadjuster[1k]: As Black I'm thinking about how to disrupt White's influence
ajiadjuster[1k]: Variation: When you played F17, I considered H17 in response
ajiadjuster[1k]: Variation: get out faster
ajiadjuster[1k]: Variation: maybe the best outcome was some sequence to leverage the top side to attack the two stones on the left side
ajiadjuster[1k]: the board position here isn't ideal, but sometimes this kind of exchange is crucial
ajiadjuster[1k]: Variation: seems like your group can find life, though it's cramped
ajiadjuster[1k]: Variation: might have been worth fixing and then running
ajiadjuster[1k]: your dumpling has fewer liberties than my L-shsaped group, but it also has more room to run and possibly gain more liberties
Move 83
canyonclimber[12k]: This are good variations.
Move 97
January 15, 2025
ajiadjuster[1d]: Variation: I should have played L8 first - H7 just fixed your shape for you
Move 107
ajiadjuster[1d]: Variation: expected this - it's good to avoid being sealed in, even if you manage to live
canyonclimber[12k]: that variation while preventing me from getting sealed off would allow an attack on my corner later and I figured itd be better to live
ajiadjuster[1d]: Variation: who is attacking whom?
ajiadjuster[1d]: Variation: another possibility
Move 108
ajiadjuster[1d]: also worth noting that your corner shape, locally, is geared toward influence, not territory. the 3-3 is still open
ajiadjuster[1d]: Thanks for the game.
ajiadjuster[1d]: Feel free to ask some questions or make some variations
canyonclimber[12k]: Thanks! I’ll look over more detailed when I get chance to
ajiadjuster[1d]: Sounds good
January 17, 2025
canyonclimber[12k]: If you could summarize my mistakes in a few topics I need to focus on id greatly appreciate it
January 19, 2025
ajiadjuster[1d]: Variation: This is a common joseki, so I'd recommend studying the main variations - especially this one
ajiadjuster[1d]: based on our games, the only basic principle I'd emphasize is to avoid getting sealed in and, instead, jump out toward the center
ajiadjuster[1d]: Variation: here, for example
ajiadjuster[1d]: I think more often than not, you'll get better results that way
ajiadjuster[1d]: Variation: this was another example - don't get boxed in
ajiadjuster[1d]: it was a key issue in our other game too
ajiadjuster[1d]: you have a good foundation, I think, so otherwise it's about reading - study some tesuji next, perhaps
